Day 9: Beaune, France – Saturday, June 16, 2012

Today was market morning in Beaune again.  This time, we got there early enough to not only have breakfast, but to wander around all the stalls before the vendors started dismantling and leaving.

We bought 2 brioches each – raisin and chocolate – found a store where we could purchase coffees to go (cafes au lait work the best), and found a perch on the edge of a flower planter to have our breakfast and watch the activity around us.

Beaunois take market day very seriously – lots and lots of families with their baskets, buying up their needs of the week (or a few days).  Then there are the tourists, recognizable by how often they stop to take pictures of the displays (like us).

Regardless, it was a sunny, hot morning, and the market was jam packed, complete with (only one) beggar and two street entertainers.

I started my shopping this morning – gifts to bring home for those who are either helping us out with Chaos or our home, and for Yelena, of course.  It’s tricky to find appropriate items, that are easy to pack into a suitcase, in a town with very little shopping options.

By the time we left the market around 1pm, we were hot and tired, so headed back home and had a nap (because we could).

Tonight we headed into Savigny-les-Beaunes for another fabulous dinner, this time at L’Ouvree.  There we met a couple from Kamloops who are bicycling around the area, a couple from Belgium who were lovely to chat with (but, for some reason, have no interest in traveling to North America), and another British couple who have been to many parts of Canada, love it there, and are planning another trip back soon.

We are safely back, with help from our friendly GPS, and are planning another quiet day tomorrow.
