Day 8: Beaune, France – Friday, June 15, 2012

Today was a very lazy day, topped off by the most lovely dinner in a neighbouring village.  We slept in a bit longer this morning, and I stayed in bed reading while Steve showered and collected our breakfast from Katherine.

Then, while Steve got comfy on the patio to read, I spent a couple of hours posting 3 days worth of photos on Facebook while chatting with my niece, Tania, in Vancouver, through Google chat.  The world has become such a small place.

It was warmer and sunnier today, so we headed out for a walk up the local mountain (hill) to the village cemetery to check out the 11th century Mont Saint Victor.  It was a somewhat steep climb, but scenic along the way and worthwhile at the top.  There is clear evidence of pride in this village cemetery – the grounds are so well tended and there are so many flowers at gravesides.

We all know the poem Flanders Fields, and we all wear a poppy in November to remember those who fought and died for us, but the poppy symbol is much more understandable when you see them growing wild in almost every field you pass in France.

We took another recommendation for dinner at La Grappe de Pernand in the village of Pernand-Vergelesse (2 villages over).  Thank goodness for our GPS as, without a little satellite help, we probably wouldn’t have found the restaurant OR found our way back!  It was warm enough to eat on the terrace, which overlooked hectares of vineyards.  Dinner was delicious, as was the local wine, and our host and hostess were charming.  At 10:15, there was still quite a bit of light in the sky, but by 10:30, it was pretty well gone.  We’ve decided that June is the best month to take vacations!
