France 2015 – Brittany – Saturday, June 6 – Faux Megaliths

I did not sleep last night and I mean all night – wide awake.  This is the second time this has happened since we got here.  Oh well, could be worse…

We took advantage of the market in Penvenan this morning and bought groceries for dinner.  After deciding on a roast chicken, we passed by a few stalls that sold their birds with their heads still on.  Now I know they start out that way, and I know someone has to take them off, but I’d prefer if the heads were already severed before they got to my kitchen 🙂  We found another vendor who sold chickens without their heads so bought one there.

It was drizzly at the market this morning so I left my camera in my bag.  But Steve got a few shots, including one of the ladies who own one of the patisseries…

Because we had such a great experience at Le Restaurant Le Crustace in Penvenan with our other friends last week (R,R,J,M), we wanted to share that with Jan and Peter so I skipped into the restaurant to make reservations for tomorrow.  It turns out they’re closed on Sunday so we decided to eat there tonight and have our market chicken tomorrow.  With that all sorted out we headed back home where I had a much-needed 2 hour nap, and woke up feeling so much better.

I had read that there are impressive Megaliths in Brittany that rival Stonehenge in Britain but they are located in Carnac, about a 3 hour drive from here.  Upon further reading, there are also Megaliths around Trebeurden, only a 30 minute drive.  Off we went.  Turns out they are scattered – some you can see by driving to them, some you have to hike into, some are on private property.  We started by driving and were so totally unimpressed by what we saw we renamed them Miniliths.  So glad we didn’t drive 3 hours to see these ones!

As an aside, though, when I told the girl in the Office du Tourisme I was from Canada, she told me she thought she recognized my Quebecois accent!!!  I wasn’t sure whether I should feel happy about that or insulted as I was under the impression I had learned Parisian French in school.  Regardless, I thought it was a hoot, as I’ve only spoken French inside Quebec once since I left it 32 years ago, and that was 15 years ago.  Besides, I would have thought I had an English accent.  In any case, I’m choosing to feel that my French is adequate enough to fool someone 🙂

We were on another beach, though, so took advantage of some more exploration.

Following the Megalith disappointment, we drove up the coast and detoured onto Isle Grande, a very tiny island full of homes and beaches.  We trekked along a path for a bit, watching the tide roll in rather quickly. So fascinating, and scary at the same time, how the tide can produce such lovely beaches one moment, and such erosion the next.

Continuing our drive along the coast back home, we didn’t intend to stop at our beach but who can resist the sight of horseback riders on a beach?

Dinner in Penvenan was, once again, fabulous.  I so enjoyed what I ate there last week, I chose exactly the same menu (shrimp on a skewer in orange whiskey sauce, veal medallions, warm brie salad, apple flan with apple glace and calvados sauce).  We all left hours later feeling very satisfied with the food and the exceptional service.
