No one seemed to be in a big hurry today, which suited us just fine. We slept in again but, this time, we had a much better breakfast – crepes, breads, cheeses, patés, strawberries, honey, jams, eggs – from a well-stocked kitchen.
Today was awesome!!! as we hiked the Pink Granite Coast trail, starting from Ploumanach. With each corner we turned, and each stone we walked around, there was another amazing view and photo op. The rocks were formed about 300 million years ago as the ice withdrew and volcanoes erupted. Apparently, way back then, this region of the world had mountains higher than the Alps. Over the years, fissures broke these massive rocks apart, then wear and tear by weather and ocean rounded their corners. This trail is completely accessible to strollers and wheelchairs, making it a must-see destination for everyone!
See the side of that building just above? It is full of bullet holes, a grim reminder of a time when France was not quite the vacation destination it is today.
After a few hours, and not a great distance because we took every opportunity to explore nooks and crannies, we ended up in a little town called Saint Guirec where we had a late lunch (more crepes and cider). By then, we were all tired and not excited about the walk back but found a shortcut through some streets back to the car thanks to cell phones and GPS!
Tonight, we decided to eat out and chose the Restaurant Le Crustace in Penvenan that we had seen yesterday when we drove by it for groceries. What a discovery! The service was impeccable and the food top notch. Our hostess spoke the most beautiful French, with slow and perfect enunciation (to everyone, not just us foreigners). I was able to understand everything she said! We all chose from the prix fixe menu. All the guys had moules appetizers, Rosanne and I had the most delicious shrimp on skewers in an orange whiskey sauce. I couldn’t get enough of that sauce and not a drop was missed as I used my bread to soak it all up!!! Steve and I both had veal medallions in another fabulous sauce, then salads – his with warm chevre, mine with warm brie. We followed all that up with an apple flan with apple glace and calvados sauce. YUM! For this, we paid only 27 euros each! Oh, plus the wine, of course.
